5 unusual forms of therapy you should know about

5 unusual forms of therapy you should know about

June 23, 2023 By Jessica Morris

Blog-June-23

Therapy is more than sitting in chairs and talking. We often see this traditional form of counselling on screen, be it Fraser Crane spouting off advice on the radio, or someone lying on an expensive leather couch!

Don’t get us wrong – some people thrive with this traditional form of therapy. It holds space for narrative therapy, CBT, couples counselling and more. But for people who struggle to express their feelings through words, or who want something different, there are other options. Here are five lesser known form of therapy you should know about.

  1. Equine Therapy
This holds all the benefits of counselling with the addition of horses! Conducted by a trained therapist alongside trained horses, equine therapy uses the behaviour, observation and energy of horses to help people Experiencing anxiety, learning difficulties, low self confidence and trauma. Read more here.
  2. Art therapy
Expressing something through art allows our brain to exercise its creativity. And inevitably, this means we process our emotions on paper. Even our sub conscious ones! A trained art therapist will empower you to express yourself through art and then find resolutions through this. The type of art and medium used will depend on the therapist and client.
  3. Hypnotherapy
Some people have question marks about this type of therapy due to its portrayal on films. It comes down the training a therapist has had, and why they are using it. At Watersedge, we utilise Hypnotherapy as part of the Richards Trauma Process. Unlike what we see on TV, people remain conscious and in control of their bodies and minds through the session. Rather, the therapist takes the client through a guided meditation and imagery, enabling you to access the subconscious, deeply rooted trauma and establishing identity. Find out more here.
  4. Music Therapy
For millennia people have used music to process and heal. Music Therapy is the clinical use of music to achieve goals. These goals could be about lessening stress, enhancing well being and improving quality of life. While anyone can experience the benefits of music by playing or listening to a track, a licensed Music Therapist understands the evidence based framework of it.
  5. Dance/Movement Therapy DMT
Sometimes we just have to move to process our emotions. DMT uses a relational process and therapeutic movement to strengthen people emotionally, socially and culturally. DMT also develops motor skills and helps people integrate their feelings and physical presence.

Watersedge uses a range of talk based therapy, play therapy and more to strengthen our clients. We would love to help you.
