3 Steps to Grow in Positivity

3 Steps to Grow in Positivity

Would you consider yourself a glass half full, or a glass half empty kind of person?

We can all go from a positive mental attitude to a negative mental attitude in seconds, and even the most care-free people have to grow in positivity!  During COVID-19, we need to remain more positive than ever to care for our own wellbeing. But how do we grow in positivity when the world feels like it is in chaos?

In the TedX Talk ‘How to Grow As a Person (And Why It Sucks)’, our friend Johnny Crowder from Cope Notes gets real about positivity. As a suicide and abuse survivor, he explains the game changing steps that propelled him toward healing and wholeness.  Here is what we learned.

Step One: Take responsibility for your healing

Johnny spent a decade looking for an instant cure to his complicated diagnosis of ADHD, Schizophrenia, OCD and an eating disorder.  His magic moment never came because he was waiting for everybody, or anything else, to ‘fix’ him.

Johnny began to grow in positivity when he took responsibility for his own healing. He committed to the process of re-training his brain and engaging with professionals. In the same way, we will only grow when we take responsibility for our healing.

Step Two: Be intentional in your growth

By ‘surprising’ himself with positive notes around the home, Johnny intentionally retrained his brain, challenging the barrage of negative thoughts that haunted him.

It takes more than one attempt to grow in positivity, which is why Johnny learned to adapt when his brain dulled out the positive messages. He began sending encouraging messages to friends instead, and realised he was not alone. What can you push yourself to do today that will propel you towards growth?

Step Three: Be consistent and show up

The brain can take up to 245 days to make a new habit, which is why positivity is about more than a single moment. It’s about a lifestyle of consistent recovery.

Johnny intentionally challenges his negative thoughts on a daily basis. This, along with support from professionals and friends, enables him to live with a positive mental attitude.

In your own journey to health and positivity, remember that it is about a series of small incremental steps. You won’t always see the progress – but by consistently working towards health, you can achieve it.
