Why Your Therapist Tells You to Practice Deep Breathing

Why Your Therapist Tells You to Practice Deep Breathing

Why is deep breathing so good for us? We all need oxygen to survive, but there’s a good reason therapists tell us to practice slow, deep breathing when we are stressed: it increases oxygen to our heart and brain, relieving us of tension and giving us clarity.

Practicing deep breaths in a 3-second in 3-second out model is useful in moments of panic or stress, but it also has long term benefits when practiced daily.

As Happify tells us, doing this is scientifically proven to benefit your physical and mental health – and the best part is you can coordinate it with other activities like exercise.

Take a look at the infographic below for examples of how you can practice deep breathing, and to see how it will help you live a more fulfilling (and calmer!) life.
