Finding your fixed point in times of uncertainty

Finding your fixed point in times of uncertainty

January 14, 2022 By Colleen Morris Leave a Comment

In these days of global pandemic, you may feel you have no fixed point upon which to center yourself.  Where you  relied upon things like a full social life, consistent employment, holidays and plans for holidays, the pandemic has undermined them.  This can  lead to a loss of stability and security. The pandemic has metaphorically ‘pulled the rug from under your feet’, creating chaos, distress and hopelessness.

Where do you turn in times of crisis?

At times of crisis, we turn to the things that feel permanent in our lives to sustain and renew hope. This may have been family and organized religion, two fundamental institutions that historically provided solidarity, hope and meaning.   Today it is necessary to go deeper into yourself to find meaning, purpose and hope where it has become absent.

This deepening is by nature a spiritual journey.

It will take you to the core of who you are as a human being, your ‘fixed point’.  Pursuing and nurturing a relationship with the spiritual dimension of your life,  can offer you meaning, purpose and security unique to your own experience.

What is Spirituality?

“Spirituality is the aspect of humanity that refers to the way individuals seek and express meaning and purpose.  The  way they experience their connectedness to the moment, to self, to others, to nature, and to the significant or sacred”. (Quoted from The Journal of Palliative Care, Vol. 12, No 10, 2009)

Key to our spirituality is our sense of connectedness to ourselves, to others, to the environment and to the sacred.

There are many ways to pursue this sense of spiritual connection. One of the practices I have found most valuable in my own life has been the commitment to a relationship  known as Spiritual Direction.

What is Spiritual Direction?

Spiritual Direction invites you to explore your  connection to every  aspect of your spirituality. It is a companioning relationship where the Spiritual Director accompanies you as  you listen for the presence of the Sacred and explore together how that looks in your daily life. By deepening the connection to your spirituality, you will discover meaning, purpose and security.
